Swiss Artillery “Gotthard-Besteck” Sword and Bayonet Set
Model: M1842 Sabre & Socket Bayonet Combination
Country: Switzerland
Date: Mid–Late 19th Century
Branch: Artillery
Markings: I. G.A. 32. (blade)
An exceptionally rare and complete example of a Swiss Gotthard-Besteck set, comprising the M1842 artillery sabre, matching socket marked and numbered socket bayonet, and original black leather suspension rig with brass fittings and artillery insignia. These sets were issued primarily to Swiss artillery units stationed in key defensive positions, such as the Gotthard Pass — hence the name “Gotthard-Besteck.”
The sabre features the characteristic single-edged, slightly curved blade with a brass stirrup hilt and ribbed grip. The ricasso bears a crisp regimental inscription:
I. G.A. 32.
This markings represent the following:
•I. = 1st Battalion / Regiment
•G.A. = Genie Artillerie (Engineer Artillery) or more likely Gothard Artillerie / Gebirgs Artillerie (Mountain Artillery), as seen on Swiss artillery weapons of the mid-19th century.
•32. = Weapon or soldier inventory number within the unit.
The socket bayonet fits neatly alongside the sabre in its dedicated scabbard channel, illustrating the Swiss Army’s pragmatic approach to equipping artillerymen with both edged weapons and a bayonet for use with their rifles.
The leather frog and suspension rig are original period pieces, rarely encountered intact. The two brass buckles bear crossed cannons — the classic insignia of Swiss artillery — confirming its artillery assignment. The rig is designed to be worn over the shoulder, distributing the weight of both weapons and allowing for rapid access.
Such complete artillery Besteck sets were produced in limited numbers and saw service during the second half of the 19th century, including the period leading up to and during World War I when Switzerland armed and mobilized along its borders. Many sabres were later separated from their bayonets, making this intact rig with both weapons a scarce collector’s find.
Condition: Very good for age. The sabre blade shows light patina and honest field wear, the brass hilt has developed a warm patina, and the leather is supple with intact stitching and fittings. Bayonet in matching condition with good point and socket. All components are original and period-matched.
Overall Length (sabre): approx. 74 cm
Blade Length: approx. 59 cm
