Military officer example, as opposed to fraternal or cadet. Nice engravings on the sturdy blade

Maker info:

August & Albert Schnitzler of Solingen, Germany. According to Bezdek’s German Swords and Sword Makers, the company was in business from 1864-1873. They had offices in Birmingham, England from 1864-1873, and sold cavalry sabers to northern dealers during the American Civil War,

1864-1865 (years they sold to northern dealers, not the years of the war)

The straight, double-edged steel blade is a high-grade, nice overall with a diamond shaped, double-edged cross section. Blade is profusely embellished on both sides of the blade with foliate scrollwork and a military panoply of arms executed via the acid etching process. Obverse shows the script letters

“U.S.” 8″

Handsome tight Shagreen grips are wound with a fine brass double twist wire wrap. At both ends of the grip are brass ferrules with tooled edged designs. Round brass pommel cap is decorated with a leaf design.

Pommel and knuckle bow exhibit no movement on the tang. The brass decorated knuckle bow flows into a kidney-shaped counter-guard (shell) that is nicely ornamented on the stationary obverse side with a cast eagle with flags in the background. Reverse side has an operational hinged guard that folds down when the sword was worn.

Great condition overall.

Partial knot remaining.
